Project Background

GOAL is an international non-governmental, non-political, non-denominational relief and development organization, which is committed to ensure that the vulnerable group and those affected by humanitarian crises have access to the fundamental rights, which include adequate shelter, food, water and sanitation, healthcare and education. GOAL began its operations in Kenya in 1983 as a support base for emergency programmes in South Sudan. Today, GOAL Kenya delivers humanitarian services to drought and conflict affected communities and integrated development programme that targets exceptionally vulnerable communities in Nairobi’s urban informal settlements. In 2007, GOAL Kenya shifted from direct provision of social services to implementation of programmes partnership with local, national and international government and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).

GOAL’s current programmes include: A multi-sectoral Programme of Support for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances in Nairobi’s informal settlements, humanitarian relief initiatives for drought and conflict affected communities in Marsabit and Daadab and an emergency shelter programme for individuals and families displaced during the Post-Election Violence of 2007.

This evaluation focused on review of the Programme of Support for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances in Nairobi. Programme of Support for Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances: The Programme of Support to Children and Youth in Difficult Circumstances worked to address the needs of out-of-school children and youth in Nairobi’s informal settlements by providing access to three fundamental rights: protection, health, and education. The programme focuses on building the capacity of households and communities to prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect and support safe and sustainable access to education and health services. A central component of the health programme also seeks to improve water and sanitation conditions to reduce water-borne diseases and improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities in target communities.

The project evaluation was done in 2012.
