Background

This program is a wider integrated and collaborative approach by Welthungerhilfe and the partnering Kenyan NGOs in response to the drought stricken population within the arid areas specifically in Turkana, Wajir, Mandera and Garissa. The Kenyan NGO‟s that have implemented this project include: Turkana Pastoralist Development Organization (TUPADO) in Turkana County, Wajir South Development Association (WASDA) in Wajir County, Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA) in Mandera County and Pastoralist Girls Initiative (PGI) in Garissa County.

Welthungerhilfe has vast experience in implementing projects through national partners to strengthen their capacity as is the case in India, Latin America and Ethiopia. This program offered Welthungerhilfe-Kenya and its‟ partners  an opportunity  to share learning experiences with its other Country programs and the wider public. By supporting, WASH, Agriculture and Food Security, Economic Recovery and Market Systems, Risk Management Policy and Practice, Welthungerhilfe and its Kenyan NGO implementing partners sought to improve the wellbeing of communities in the arid areas of Kenya. This project is expected to have an impact on the social and economic development of the individuals and  communities and  cover  urgently needed relief and recovery support and DRR in the arid areas. It is also projected to address the gender issues especially inequality between men and women in the sharing of power and decision-making. DWHH and partners recognize that the program area has gender equality problems and have ensured appropriate involvement of both women and men as key players in the program implementation by consulting both men and women on the mutual responsibilities to be agreed upon.
