Background

In order to achieve the objectives of the project, Oxfam contracted Breinscope Consultants Limited to undertake an analysis of the livelihood opportunities that exist or has the potential to be harnessed within the communities. These included current skill sets amongst the beneficiaries and the gaps as per the demand in the market, identification of relevant training institutions that can provide the training and mapping the viable business opportunities that the urban poor can venture into as well as the micro finance institutions that are willing to do business with the urban poor.

This exercise was a build-up to the ongoing Cash transfer project exit strategy within Mukuru Slums of Nairobi’s Industrial area.

The objectives of the Livelihoods Mapping and Analysis exercise were;

  1. To undertake an analysis of the livelihood opportunities that exist or has the potential to be harnessed.
  2. To analyse the current skill sets amongst the beneficiaries and the gaps as per the demand in the market.
  • To identify relevant training institutions that can provide the training.

To map the viable business opportunities that the urban poor can venture into as well as the micro finance institutions that is willing to do business with the urban poor.
